Bourton-on-the-Water

With the River Windrush running through its centre, the picturesque village of Bourton-on-the-Water is also known as the Venice of the Cotswolds.

Bourton-on-the-Water has a rich history going back to the Stone Age with an encampment site at the northern edge of the village. Iron Age currency bars, dating from 300BC, were found on this site and are now housed at the British Museum.

As well as the picturesque streets, river and bridges, Bourton-on-the-Water is also home to tearooms, cafes and pubs for you to find refreshments, as well as ample local gift shops. Attractions include the famous model village, Cotswold Motoring and Toy Museum, Hawkstone Brewery and Birdland Park and Gardens.

Broadway

With views over sixteen counties and a fascinating and colourful history, Broadway Tower is not to be missed.

Recently refurbished, Broadway Tower was first conceived by Capability Brown over 200 years ago. With a rich history of residents, including Pre-Raphaelite artists William Morris and Rossetti, you can learn all about the tower and be transported back to the late Georgian and Victorian eras as you explore the tower’s interior. A climb to the tower’s viewing platform offers visitors the chance to view breathtaking scenery which spans sixteen counties from this unique vantage point.

Also on this site is a decommissioned secret Cold War nuclear bunker, now open to visitors who can discover how it was used during service when crewed by the Royal Observer Corps.

Stow-on-the-Wold

A buzzing Cotswold market town steeped in history, with an abundance of independent shops, antiques centres, eateries and inns.

Stow-on-the-Wold is the highest of the Cotswolds towns at 800ft and is located on the Roman Fosse Way. The large market square is still the focus of town life, as it was throughout history, with medieval market stocks at one end and the ancient market cross at the other. The town was an important site in the English Civil War, with the Battle of Stow-on-the-Wold fought at nearby Donnington in 1646. During this time, St Edward’s Church was used to house prisoners of war, and the North Door of the church is said to have been the inspiration for Tolkien’s ‘Doors of Durin’ in The Lord of the Rings.

As well as its fascinating history, the town boasts many shops and cafes making it the perfect stop-off for a bite to eat or a well-earned drink.

Bibury

For an authentic Cotswold village experience, look no further than Bibury which is nestled in the Gloucestershire countryside.

William Morris described Bibury as ‘the most beautiful village in England’ – and who are we to argue! From Arlington Row with its picturesque Cotswold-stone cottages to the UK’s oldest working trout farm, for such a small village, Bibury has a lot to offer.

The Slaughters

Linked by the River Eye, Upper and Lower Slaughter celebrate all that is English and beautiful about life in the Cotswolds.

Contrary to their rather gloomy-sounding names (‘slaughter’ actually means ‘muddy place’ in Old English), these two villages are picture-postcard locations. If you’re feeling energetic, there is a circular walk linking Lower and Upper Slaughter with a tearoom and country inn for a well-deserved rest at the end!
